If you’ve scrolled through any online metal discussions lately, you’re likely aware of Marilyn Manson‘s upcoming return to touring this summer, sparking a range of reactions from fans and critics alike. Despite a career built on controversy, Manson faced significant backlash in 2021 amid allegations of sexual assault and misconduct by multiple women.
These accusations led to civil lawsuits and Manson‘s defamation suit against his ex-fiancée, Evan Rachel Wood, who initially came forward with allegations against him. Manson claimed Wood and her associate orchestrated a campaign against him, but much of his defamation suit has been dismissed, though some claims are ongoing.
In the wake of the allegations, Manson was dropped by his management, talent agency, record label, and more, leading to a period of relative obscurity. However, his sizable following, evident from his continued strong Spotify presence with over 7 million monthly listeners, suggests enduring support among fans.
Despite this controversy, Manson is set to return to the stage this summer, joining Five Finger Death Punch on a North American tour, surprising many given his absence since 2019. The decision has sparked further discourse, with Five Finger Death Punch guitarist Zoltan Bathory addressing the choice during a recent interview:
“Manson hasn’t been out on the road for a while, so a lot of people wanna see him. At one point he was one of the most iconic artists on planet earth. So he’s back on stage, back in the saddle. That’s gonna be amazing. He’s also sober and clean, so we always support that, obviously. Ivan [Moody] had a dark period, and he was gone, man. My little brother was on the brink of dying, man, and he came back from that. And he’s clean and sober for six years.
If he can do it, somebody who was that gone can do it, and he’s now a different man, then it’s a good example for anyone else. If you’re struggling, man, don’t give up. You can come back from that. And Manson is sober and he’s staying clean and doing the work, so also we’re supporting that. So it’s gonna be an amazing tour.”
