Paramore vocalist Hayley Williams recently had high praise for Turnstile, dubbing the Baltimore melodic hardcore outfit “my Fugazi” following her appearance at the premiere of their new visual album ‘TURNSTILE: NEVER ENOUGH’ and an onstage cameo with the band.
Williams, who guests on “SEEIN’ STARS” from Turnstile’s freshly released album “NEVER ENOUGH”, took to Instagram to express her admiration:
“Can’t remember the first time I heard Turnstile but it was over a decade ago and I was in my early 20s. I have loved every iteration of their band thus far. A genre is a label but community is alive. TS represent so much just by showing up exactly as they are. Which is probably why all kinds of ppl can belong at their show. They are my Fugazi but they’re also my friends. Thanks for inspiration!!!!”
The comparison, while heartfelt, hasn’t sat well with some corners of the hardcore community. Washington D.C. legends Fugazi are iconic not just for their influential post-hardcore sound, but for their unwavering commitment to DIY ethics, famously avoiding major labels, merchandise, and corporate affiliations.
Turnstile, by contrast, are signed to Roadrunner Records, have partnered with Taco Bell, and just recently saw bassist/vocalist Franz Lyons front a new denim campaign for GUESS.
Though Williams’ comments came from a place of respect and connection, they’ve reignited conversation around what defines “punk values” in 2025—and whether modern bands can still embody them while navigating major platforms.

She’s saying Turnstile is hugely influential to her. Not that they exemplify every single ethos of a band from a completely different era & circumstance.
Andrew Dalton don’t be rational here.
