Hopeless Records Acquires Fat Wreck Chords Catalog, Waives Over $3 Million in Artist Debt

In a major shakeup for the punk rock community, Hopeless Records has officially acquired the catalog of fellow longtime independent label Fat Wreck Chords. While the financial terms remain undisclosed, the impact is clear: this marks a significant collaboration between two of punk’s most respected institutions.

As part of the deal, Hopeless will adopt a no-new-signings policy under the Fat Wreck Chords banner, allowing full focus to remain on the label’s storied roster. Perhaps even more notably, Hopeless has waived all unrecouped balances for current FAT artists — a sum reportedly exceeding $3 million.

Founded in 1990 by Fat Mike (NOFX) and Erin Kelly-Burkett, Fat Wreck Chords has released hundreds of influential punk albums over the decades. Their roster has included artists such as Against Me!, Lagwagon, NOFX, Propagandhi, Sick Of It All, Rise Against, Strung Out, and many more.

While Hopeless now controls the FAT catalog, Fat Mike and Kelly-Burkett will retain ownership of the Fat Wreck Chords name, logo, and trademark, ensuring the brand remains in their hands.

Hopeless Records founder Louis Posen shared the following statement on the acquisition:

“The opportunity to lead the history, catalog, and roster of Fat Wreck Chords into the future, alongside Mike and Erin, is the honor and privilege of my 30-year career. We are incredibly grateful that Mike and Erin have entrusted the Hopeless team to care for their 35 years of passion and hard work. I don’t know when it will fully sink in, but we are deeply committed to honoring and continuing the remarkable history of Fat Wreck Chords.”

Fat Wreck Chords co-founder Erin Kelly-Burkett added:

“FAT has been my baby for 35 years. To me, it’s more than a label; it’s a community, a home, and a legacy built from the ground up. Louis understands that, and I can’t think of anyone better than Hopeless to carry FAT forward. As a true fan, Louis knows firsthand what FAT is all about, and will build on the foundation Mike and I laid with care and respect. These bands are my family, and I know they’re in good hands with the Hopeless family.”

While fans can rest assured that the FAT legacy will be protected, this move could also signal a new chapter for the label’s rich discography and artist support model — one rooted in creative independence and artist-first values.
