Alternative metal outfit Islander have released their studio cover of Deftones‘ “Back To School (Mini Maggit).” The track originally appeared as a single from the band’s acclaimed 2000 album ‘White Pony.’
Islander previously teased plans to perform the song live back in June, eventually adding it to their setlists during their summer shows. Today, August 11th, the band officially unveiled their studio rendition.
Speaking earlier this summer about their decision to take on the track, Islander offered a simple explanation:
“If they’re not gonna play it, we figured someone should.”
Deftones last performed “Back To School (Mini Maggit)” in 2022.
The song has remained a somewhat controversial entry in the Deftones catalog. It was created after the band faced label pressure to produce a more commercially viable single that aligned with the musical trends surrounding the release of ‘White Pony.’
Later editions of ‘White Pony’ featured “Back To School (Mini Maggit)” as the album’s opening track, a decision that the band felt interfered with the original sequencing and vision of the record.
