Jason Newsted Opens Up On His Successful 2025 Battle With Throat Cancer

Former Metallica bassist/vocalist Jason Newsted has revealed that he successfully battled throat cancer last year and is now cancer-free. In a recent conversation with Dean Delray, Newsted said he underwent a procedure on May 8, 2025, had follow-up laser work, and got his “free and clear” result about three weeks ago.

Newsted said the diagnosis forced him to slow down, rest, and make some major lifestyle changes, including cutting back on smoking weed and drinking. He described the experience as a wake-up call and said he feels more clear-headed now than at any point in his adult life.

The timing of the interview also ties into Newsted’s upcoming live activity with The Chophouse Band. His 2026 run includes headlining shows in the Northeast and Midwest, plus multiple dates supporting Blackberry Smoke in July.
