MASTODON Begin Recording First Album Since Brent Hinds’ Departure, Nick Johnston Involved in Writing Sessions

The wait for Mastodon’s ninth studio album is officially over—at least when it comes to the recording process. Guitarist Bill Kelliher confirmed via Patreon on June 16th that recording sessions have now commenced, marking the band’s first new music since the departure of longtime vocalist/guitarist Brent Hinds.

Back in January, drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor teased that the new record would center around a “supernatural horror” theme, telling Metal Hammer, “I don’t see a world in which it does not come out in 2025.” That release timeline may still be on track—though March’s sudden lineup shake-up may understandably push things back.

As of now, Nick Johnston has been filling in as the band’s touring guitarist, and according to Kelliher, has also taken part in writing sessions. Whether Johnston becomes a permanent member remains to be seen, but his creative involvement signals a major shift in Mastodon’s sonic future.

The band has not revealed an official replacement for Hinds, and Kelliher previously confirmed to Guitar World that the upcoming album will feature no lingering contributions from Hinds.
