Atlanta, GA progressive sludge metal stalwarts Mastodon have revealed plans to record a studio version of their cover of Black Sabbath’s 1972 track “Supernaut”. The band first performed the song live at the July 5th ‘Back To The Beginning’ farewell concert honoring Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath, an event that took on even greater significance following Osbourne’s passing weeks later.

Vocalist/drummer Brann Dailor and guitarist Bill Kelliher shared details about the song selection during an appearance at the Bloodstock Open Air festival earlier this month. Dailor called performing at the tribute “the honor of a lifetime,” adding:
“It’s better than a Grammy. It’s better than anything that anybody could ever bestow upon you to be called upon by the giant oak tree that is Black Sabbath.”
Kelliher explained the decision to cover “Supernaut”:
“‘Supernaut,’ I’ve loved that song. I mean, all their songs are great, but that one… you must have sold your soul to learn that riff. The devil gave you that riff. So when we saw it was available, we knew it was the one.”
Dailor added that the choice came partly from logistical considerations:
“Initially, I wanted to do ‘Children Of The Grave’ because of its tempo, which fits our style. But Lamb Of God had already claimed that. So when ‘Supernaut’ was open, I felt I could pull it off singing and drumming, and it ended up being the perfect high-energy opener.”
While Lamb Of God quickly released a studio version of their “Children Of The Grave” cover, Mastodon have yet to record theirs—but the band confirms it’s in the works. Kelliher stated:
“…We’ve been playing it every night. We’ve recorded it live a few times… Maybe we’ll do a live version, maybe a studio version.”
Dailor affirmed:
“We’re definitely recording it.”
Mastodon’s rendition of “Supernaut” will join the growing list of live and studio tributes paying respect to the legacy of Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath.
