Mastodon have unveiled their new single “In The Ruins” alongside an animated music video directed by Hey Beautiful Jerk.
The track marks the third preview from the GRAMMY Award-winning progressive sludge metal outfit’s upcoming album ‘Marrow Deep’, which is set for an August 28th release through Loma Vista.
The new video brings an animated vision to a song that was inspired in part by recent personal losses experienced by Brann Dailor and Troy Sanders. Director Hey Beautiful Jerk explained that the concept began taking shape during an unpleasant experience of his own, after spending 10 hours in an emergency room with a severe eye infection.
“The initial inspiration for Frank and the concept for ‘In The Ruins’ came to me when I was in the ER for 10 hours with the worst eye infection of my life. The pain was so bad it felt like my eye was revolting and wanted to escape my head. I had just talked to Brann about the meaning of the song and how it was inspired by his and Troy’s recent losses. The expression ‘picking up the pieces’ came to me and I sketched a very rough version of Frank on my phone, capturing the idea as fast as I could before my eye wanted to escape my face once again.”
‘Marrow Deep’ will be a significant release in Mastodon’s history, arriving as the band’s first studio album without late guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds, who died earlier this year.
The record also marks the first time guitarist Nick Johnston and keyboardist João Nogueira have been involved together with the band during the studio process.
