After a turbulent period that fundamentally reshaped the band, Mastodon have officially released their ninth studio album, ‘Marrow Deep’.
The GRAMMY Award-winning Atlanta metal outfit’s latest record arrives as their first full-length since the departure of founding guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds, who passed away in August 2025. It also marks the studio debut of the band’s newest members, guitarist/vocalist Nick Johnston and keyboardist João Nogueira.
The album was created during a particularly difficult period for the group, with the members also dealing with personal losses away from the band. Among them was the death of drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor’s mother during the writing and recording process.
With ‘Marrow Deep’ now officially out, Mastodon have taken a moment to reflect on what it took to complete the album and reach this point.
In a message shared with fans, the band acknowledged that while difficult subject matter has long been part of their music, the circumstances surrounding this particular record made the experience feel different.
“It was a turbulent ride getting here, and while we’re no strangers to exploring heavy subject matter, this one hit differently. All we had known as a band had dramatically changed forever, as we all found ourselves navigating personal tragedies and catastrophic events.”
Despite everything happening around them, the musicians ultimately found a way to turn that turmoil into something constructive.
“This album was forged in a whole lot of chaos, and raw, unfiltered emotion, but through the uncertainty, we managed to come together, unpack the weight of it all, and create something beautiful that pushed us to our absolute limits, collectively and individually, as creatives, musicians and human beings.”
The band went on to describe the significance of the album beyond simply being another addition to their discography.
“For us, Marrow Deep is more than just a snapshot in time, it’s a testament to perseverance and the importance of getting out of bed and showing up, even when you feel like the world is crumbling around you.”
The arrival of Johnston and Nogueira has also given Mastodon a renewed sense of momentum as they move into this next chapter. The remaining founding members — Troy Sanders, Brann Dailor and Bill Kelliher — have spent more than 26 years building the band, and they say the new additions have brought fresh energy into the lineup.
“Having Nick and Joao beside us during this new chapter, has been incredibly uplifting and genuinely awesome! They bring a new energy and dynamic into the mix, and we are firing on all cylinders!”
Ultimately, Mastodon hope ‘Marrow Deep’ can mean something different to each person who hears it, whether that means providing an escape during difficult times or simply inspiring someone to pick up an instrument.
The band closed their message by thanking their longtime supporters and welcoming those discovering Mastodon through this latest chapter.
