    Mastodon Parts Ways with Brent Hinds After 25 Years

    The Mosh Network - Brent Hinds performing with Mastodon

    Mastodon announced via social media today that after 25 years, they have mutually parted ways with founding member, guitarist, and co-vocalist Brent Hinds. Hinds has not yet released a statement.

    The band shared the following message:

    “Friends and Fans,
    After 25 monumental years together, Mastodon and Brent Hinds have mutually decided to part ways.
    We’re deeply proud of and beyond grateful for the music and history we’ve shared, and we wish him nothing but success and happiness in his future endeavors. We are still very inspired and excited to show up for fans in this next chapter of Mastodon. As we move forward, all 2025 touring plans will remain intact. We look forward to seeing you on the road. – Mastodon”

    The band will return to the road in May with Coheed And Cambria and Periphery.

          Walter Burton I saw them live in 2009 and he didn’t sing the whole show. They played through all of leviathan and crack the Skye and he didn’t sing at all

        Andy Aguirre yes exactly. It’s the unique characteristics of each member that creates the sound. They all have something specific. I personally think Brent brings something to that sound that no heavy band has really had. His chickin pickin style in his leads and his vocals. It’s a huge loss. Brann is on the same level when it comes to talent and unique approach. Not to take anything away from Troy and Bill, but in my opinion losing Brent or Brann breaks the band.

        Jon Wismer well the band isn’t done. And I think if Troy wanted to do another Killer be Killed album or any of his side projects he would have by now. And I’m sure Killer be Killed is a nightmare to get everyone together to even work on a song let alone a full album

      The weird, the eclectic, the southern. I can only imagine it has something to do with politics, money, addiction, or depression. After 25 years that seems to be the only thing that can break a group of friends with a bond that strong.

      It’s a shame what ever it is and I hope Brent has a support system right now.

        Shane OConnell , It’s still Mastodon. There are many bands that carry on after one of the original band members leave. Also, from what I’ve been hearing Brann and Bill are the main songwriters in the band. Brent only contributed the icing after the songs were already written. I’m sure the rest of the guys will be fine.

          Sean Parent I get what you are saying. Brent has my favorite voice in the band.
          As a songwriter, guitarist and vocalist. Sonically, what he brings to the table is great. It also sounds like he has been super chaotic to work with as of lately.

          However, I feel like Troy, Bill and Brann can manage, I wouldn’t even argue with them making new music as the three of them and a replacement.

          It would make much more sense than the current Pantera cover band.

          Joshua Palma yup, I got really big into the in studio videos that are up on YouTube for the last few albums and 90% of the writing is done by Bill and Brann, with Troy adding some of his own songs recently, then they all get together to fine tune the songs and add solos and split up vocals. As much as I’m really going to miss Brent because of what he brings to the band, the last 10+ years of mastodon has been Bill and Brann.

        Sorry to say, but when a band loses it’s human voice it is not the same band anymore, just disband and form a new one, that’s exactly what they are doing but they always want to keep the name to trade under because it’s already familiar, here is an example of you take any artist that doesn’t create their music but just sings, would you consider the work the music producer does is the same project even if it sounds similar but has a different vocalist???…. Of course not and the same is true of a band! Take Robert plant out of zeppelin it isn’t zeppelin, take Freddy out of queen, it isn’t queen! The new incarnation is not mastodon, it’s members of mastodon with a different vocalist playing mastodon songs!

      You knew it was coming. I saw them a couple years ago with Opeth. After the last song, Brent asked the crowd if they would’ve rather heard a different song as the closer and they said yes. He told the rest of the band: I told you so.

      I remember an interview after a different tour they were part of a Q&A and Brent went unhinged about the label asking them to get in the studio for the next album and he was like: F all of you! I’m exhausted. I’m going to disappear for a few months. Maybe I come back, maybe I don’t. I hate this business.

      He did an interview years ago, around Cold Dark Place time, that he wasn’t really into metal as much anymore. He surrounded it with jokes but it seemed sincere then. I’ve been waiting for him to quit. It’s not like they’ve been pumping out albums. Makes me sad.

      It’s too bad. Brent’s crazy weird style has always been my favorite part of the band.
      The rest of the members are obviously insanely talented as well, no dig on those guys.

      I’m sure Mastodon will find someone to replace Brett. Honestly, it seems like Brett has just been phoning it in for the last few years anyways. He seems to be less interested in doing interviews or goofing around with the other guys.
      I get it though, it’s been twenty-five years, I’m sure he’s ready to do something else. To that I say, good luck Brett. I’m sure that with all people these guys know, they’ll have no problem finding someone to fill Brett’s shoes. I see this as a new era for the band, maybe a different lead guitar player with inject some new ideas into the band. I’ll just wait and see what happens.

      Love Mastodon, glad I got to see them live. But he’s been pretty open about not loving the genre of music they’re sort of dropped into, and has wanted the band to try more “eclectic” styles for a while now, guessing he’s just decided to move on. And while he’s going to be impossible to replace stylistically, I see no reason the band can’t find another eclectic guitarist, continue to do interesting things.

        Woodrow Doorman III I posted this earlier as my own comment on this post, but: He wasn’t present at the Leviathan seminar, which took place the day before the announcement, and Brann had a black eye. They “mutually” decided to part ways. I’m willing to bet some shit went down and Brent got fed up. I don’t blame him; being in a metal band your heart isn’t into sucks.

      I started listening to Mastodon in 2004. Have seen them live 3 times and loved every note, every nuance and detail. It sucks that this has happened but I understand. 25 years is very long road of creativity, discipline, difference, and compromise. As much as I hate to hear this news I gotta say I’m very interested what will come next for the remaining guys. The song writing dynamic, the vocal dynamics and obviously the lead guitar work. I love their body of work and will continue to support. Blood Mountain baby! My favorite.

      To me they’re like the metal ‘The Beatles’ each voice unique and contributing to the greater whole but I’m not going to say its not going to work because they have so much work where he is not the focal point and if anything his presence was diminishing by the album run recent releases, its whether or not they use this as opportunity to expand their sound or retreat into familiar territory.

      Sad day, but tbh I’m probably more hopeful for some more traditional heavy style from them. As cool as the weirder stuff is, Mastodon were never better (to me) than when they were banging out some straight-forward heavy riffage ala Spectrelight, March of the Fire Ants or Iron Tusk

      It’ll be interesting to see if they continue as a 3 piece or bring in another lead. The sound will definitely change either way. Is Troy and bran gonna do all the singing. A lot to be figured out.

      On a plus I’m guessing Brent will ave a new project I’m guessing. And he is him. So that sound will carry on In that. I can look forward to that.

      Brent famously said !Fuck heavy metal!

      In my opinion he hasn’t been happy with the music or the direction of the band for years. Mastodon started as a metal band and I believe they became what they are now because of Brent’s other musical interests. I hope Mastodon get back to the metal now brent has gone, I will miss him though, he is literally my musical idol !

      As a whole I love the band. If a member leaves, I still love the band. The band seemed a tigh unit but shit happens and I’ll still go to shows if I can. Each member bought their flavour but one leaving doesn’t change a thing for me.

      My guess is that he wanted to continue a more gentle push towards the sound of mastadon being Hushed and Grim and less Blood Mountain. He was never on solid ground with metal but he made it work until it didn’t. Again just an assumption, that being said that made for some amazing music that could only be done having that mindset. He will do great things with the next band for sure. I think mastadon will be just fine so long as they pick the right guy. Either a singer with various range who can play guitar or more fromtman no guitar ability and additional guitarist. I would say list some names of who you think would fit.

      Good god ? Didn’t realize Mastodon had so many fake ass Pu$&@es for fans . Oh they’re done , I’m not listening anymore , wahhhhh , without Brent they’re not Mastadon , wahhhh. You want to stop being a fan ….great . They’re better off without Brent and better off without toxic fans not giving them the credit they deserve . Mastodon will be fine , probably better . Brent will be fine , I’m sure his new projects won’t be as big as Mastadon but maybe that’s what he is looking for ? Who knows . We do know his heart hasn’t been in Mastadon for years , he has barely contributed. He has bashed the band and fans in interviews . They are in the studio when this happened so as most musicians can probably assume he wasn’t pulling his weight again , was probably just bitching and drinking again and they had enough. He’s off to play with pike, they will find someone new who has 100% wants to be there which is better for the band . Nothing Brent does is that original or unplayable ? Basic chicken picking . And personally I can’t stand his voice . Sounds like bad karaoke doing ozzy all whiney and nasally . If you’re a true Dan , give both sides a chance before you start with your “ Mastadon is over “ crap .

      Anyone who knows Mastodon knows this felt like it’s been coming for a while.

      My hope is Brent does some solo stuff. His songs on the B sides album for Empire of Sand were really cool. I think he wrote and arranged Toe to Toes and it’s one of my favorite songs of theirs.

      I think this is going to be a long-term mistake in terms of maintaining relevancy and a strong position in the music/media industry. But…. we know him to be very prolific and an excellent writer, so I wish him the best. Maybe the next thing he does will be great too. (Or maybe he’ll come back to the band later and spark a big reunion tour + media attention similar to Head in Korn… who knows haha) But best of luck to him.

      He wasn’t present at the Leviathan seminar, which took place the day before the announcement, and Brann had a black eye. They “mutually” decided to part ways. I’m willing to bet some shit went down and Brent got fed up. I don’t blame him; being in a metal band your heart isn’t into sucks.

      You fukking dorks. Bands lose members it happens ALL THE TIME imagine if Metallica didn’t do justice for all because some nerds were like No Cliff N0 miTaLLiCa. Also Brent seemed like by far the most punishing member. Great voice (if you like Ozzy Ozbourne) and the odd stroke of improvisational genius in his lead playing does not make for an irreplaceable talent.

      The last Mastodon show I attended had Hinds repeatedly wandering offstage during the set and looking generally disinterested. At the time I thought he was being a primadonna – and found the behavior off-putting and disrespectful. Now I realize he just didn’t want to be there. I hope he finds happiness in his new endeavors. Not sure who can replace what he brings to that band.

      This really should not come as surprise. He has said multiple times over the years that he’s not really into metal. Many of his projects and appearances outside of the band are in other genres. His style of playing draws more from country, bluegrass, and southern rock than it does metal. And he’s been pretty absent in regards to social media and press involving Mastodon for several years. I think it was just time for him to move on.

      Guy that claims to hate Heavy Metal while having one of the most epic metal tattoos on his forehead. 🤣 I’m glad they parted ways. After his comments bashing the genre of music he’s made a living in for 2 decades, I had a real hard time supporting the band. Let’s be honest, Brent seems to be an insufferable prick. Not taking away from his talents. He is an unbelievable player with a very unique voice. Hopefully they keep Uncle Ben on guitar and I can go back to enjoying some Mastodon.

      I’m certainly sad to see Brent leave, Blood Mountain is what got me into Mastodon, and Brent’s influence was very prevalent on that album. But, in recent years it’s been pretty obvious that Brent just wasn’t feeling it anymore, and that’s okay! The band has come to this agreement mutually, which is a much better outcome than things getting ugly. Really shows that all the guys are stand up dudes. I wish the best to Brent, and hopefully we can get some cameo’s from him on later albums 🙂
