Mastodon have publicly addressed the lawsuit brought against them by the estate of their late former guitarist and vocalist Brent Hinds, stating that they intend to vigorously defend themselves against what they characterize as a meritless suit.
The lawsuit, filed earlier this month, centers on unresolved business interests involving Hinds and Mastodon following the band’s decision to part ways with him in early 2025. According to the estate, those matters remained unresolved when Hinds died in August 2025 following a motorcycle accident.
The estate alleges that Mastodon subsequently presented an $80,000 buyout offer but failed to provide a detailed accounting explaining how that figure was determined. The estate rejected the offer and is seeking a full accounting of the relevant business interests.
The lawsuit also takes issue with the alleged use of Hinds’ likeness and image in connection with Mastodon’s ‘Marrow Deep’ album artwork and promotional materials released following his death. Additionally, the estate has objected to private details regarding Hinds’ life being discussed publicly in the band’s ‘The Mastodon In The Room’ documentary.
In a statement issued today, September 11, Mastodon pushed back against the allegations while indicating that they do not intend to discuss the legal dispute publicly going forward:
“Sadly, a private business dispute with the estate of our dear departed friend Brent Hinds was made public. We strongly deny allegations of ill intent on our part and intend to vigorously defend what we believe is a meritless lawsuit. We don’t intend to speak publicly on this going forward, as we feel this wouldn’t honor Brent’s memory or the legacy of his musical gifts.”
The lawsuit remains ongoing.
