Meridian Veil, a newly formed progressive extreme metal outfit featuring members and alumni of Cryptopsy, The Agonist, Seven Spires and Leprous, have inked a deal with Season Of Mist. The group are currently preparing their debut album, with a first taste of the forthcoming effort arriving in the form of a trailer for a track titled “The Watcher.”
The band’s lineup brings together several familiar faces from across the progressive and extreme metal scenes:
- Guitar: Danny Marino (ex-The Agonist)
- Vocals: Matt McGachy (Cryptopsy)
- Drums: Dylan Gowan (Seven Spires)
- Cello: Raphael Weinroth-Browne (Leprous touring member)
Marino revealed that the new project has been a long time coming, explaining that he and McGachy first discussed working together more than two decades ago. He also offered some insight into the emotional direction behind Meridian Veil’s upcoming debut.
“We are very happy to sign with Season of Mist. When Matt and I first met during the early 2000s, we wanted to make music together. From the beginning, the idea was for Meridian Veil to be deeply emotional. Even though our upcoming debut album gets heavy, there’s a deep longing that runs through the cautionary tale at its core.”
McGachy also expressed enthusiasm about stepping into a different musical environment, describing the experience of performing with Meridian Veil as a freeing creative outlet.
“I remember going home and feeling super excited. Singing in this band is freeing for me. I’m happy to show that side of myself.”
Gowan sees the varied musical backgrounds of the members as a major part of what makes the project stand out, while also pointing to its darker progressive metal sound and lyrical approach.
“When you have a band that involves writers from different styles, you get something really unique. Meridian Veil is progressive metal with a very dark atmosphere and thought-provoking lyrics.”
Weinroth-Browne, meanwhile, praised the songwriting on the material he heard during the demo stage, noting the group’s blend of classic influences and contemporary ideas.
“Upon hearing the demos for our upcoming album, I was struck by the quality of the songwriting. I believe Meridian Veil captures the best aspects of 2000’s death metal and prog metal with a distinctly modern approach.”
With the debut album in the works and “The Watcher” now receiving an early preview, further details surrounding Meridian Veil’s first release are expected to emerge in the months ahead.
