Just days before this year’s ‘Tomorrowland’ festival was set to kick off in Antwerp, Belgium, disaster struck. A fire broke out this past Wednesday, gutting the festival’s elaborate main stage less than 48 hours before the gates were set to open. While the cause of the blaze is still under investigation, the incident left organizers scrambling to salvage one of the world’s biggest electronic music events.
In an unexpected twist, Metallica’s recently retired European stage production—still in storage in Austria—ended up providing the solution. The thrash metal legends’ stage setup was airlifted in on short notice to serve as the foundation for ‘Tomorrowland’’s temporary main stage, allowing the festival to continue as planned this weekend.
Martin Garrix, one of this year’s headliners, took to social media to thank both Metallica and the ‘Tomorrowland’ crew for pulling off what he called a miracle:
“I can not believe I’m actually typing this… but my set at Tomorrowland is still happening!
massive love and a big shoutout to the incredible @tomorrowland team for pulling off miracles — and to @Metallica for coming through with the new stage parts.
beyond excited to close the mainstage tonight. & this will hands down be the most unique Tomorrowland ever — and yes, I’ll be streaming it too.
