Canadian nü-metalcore/deathcore outfit MOUTH BREAKER have newly debuted a music video for their latest track, “Step Down“. Matt Guarrrasi directed the video for the song, which will appear on the band’s upcoming new EP, ‘MoshUp‘.
Seek & Strike are scheduled to release ‘MoshUp‘ on September 09th, with “Step Down” offering another preview of what the group have been working toward on the forthcoming effort.
The band explained the evolution of their sound and the ideas behind the track:
“When we started in 2023, the original idea was to be something closer to a traditional hardcore band. It was pretty clear by the second or third track we released that this was not to be the case – something far more dissonant and polyrhythmic was insisting in the writing process. On ‘STEP DOWN,’ it feels like we finally let our creative drives run uninhibited and it felt like we broke through a wall to a new understanding of the band’s sound. Adept listeners will hear us invoke rhythms from 90’s-era Meshuggah, but we definitely weren’t aiming for a simple nostalgia trip.
Mixing those rhythms into our sound made them feel new and Blake (vocals) took it to the nines, delivering some of his nastiest verses to date. The verse over the bridge and build-up goes into some new territory, more of a grime flow which we didn’t expect at all. ‘STEP DOWN’ also takes aim at some particularly toxic traits and individuals we encountered, but it also tangles with the realization that gaining some adversaries is a sure sign that your art is taking risks and deflating some egos in the process. For us, that’s as good a reason as any to forge on.”
