My Chemical Romance brought their The Black Parade celebration to their home state of New Jersey on August 9th, headlining a massive show at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. Midway through their set, the band were surprised onstage by Belleville Mayor Michael Melham, who presented them with the keys to their hometown during a performance of “Welcome to the Black Parade.”
In his speech, Melham praised the group’s global impact, noting Belleville’s rich musical history and pointing out that this was the first time in the township’s history that such an honor had been bestowed. The band responded in true MCR fashion, presenting the mayor with “wheat and fish from the land of Draag,” keeping with the surreal narrative world they’ve built.
Later in the night, during the more free-spirited second half of their set, MCR surprised fans with their first-ever live performance of Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ On A Prayer.” The cover served as a nod to another New Jersey rock legend and closed out the evening on a high note.
