NINE INCH NAILS Score ‘Tron: Ares’ Under Their Own Banner—Without a Single Note of Orchestra

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails are officially scoring the upcoming sci-fi blockbuster Tron: Ares—and for the first time, they’ll be doing it under the Nine Inch Nails name, not just as composers.

The news was confirmed in a new interview with Empire, where Reznor shared that Tom MacDougall, President of Walt Disney Music, approached the duo following their award-winning work on Pixar’s Soul. Reznor recalled:

“A couple of years ago, he came by the studio and said, ‘Do you think you guys would be interested in scoring Tron?’ He didn’t even finish the sentence. I was like, ‘Fuck yes, we’d want to do that.’ He said, ‘How would you feel about if it was credited as Nine Inch Nails, versus Trent and Atticus?’ We weren’t expecting to hear that question.”

While Tron: Legacy featured a now-iconic score from Daft Punk, the upcoming Tron: Ares will take a darker, more synthetic turn.

“There’s not one second of orchestra in our score,” Reznor revealed. “It sounds precise and unpleasant at times… The concept of artificial life infused with emotions and a sense of questioning their purpose—we kind of riffed on that.”

Atticus Ross added that they weren’t afraid to push boundaries:

“It’s different from the previous Tron scores, and in places, perhaps takes a bigger swing for what music can do in cinema… that was the goal.”

Set to open in theaters October 10th, Tron: Ares will face some off-screen challenges due to ongoing public controversy surrounding star Jared Leto, but musically, it’s clear the film is heading into bold new territory.

Meanwhile, Nine Inch Nails are currently on their ‘Peel It Back World Tour’ with support from Boys Noize. The band returned to the stage earlier this month after a long stretch of inactivity.
