Noctule, the video game-inspired metal project led by former Svalbard vocalist/guitarist Serena Cherry, have unveiled a new single inspired by one of the most formidable characters in Elden Ring.
Dubbed “Goddess Of Rot,” the track serves as Cherry’s musical tribute to Malenia, one of the bosses featured in FromSoftware’s acclaimed action RPG. The song will appear on Noctule’s upcoming sophomore album, ‘Extinguish Thy Flame,’ which focuses entirely on the bosses and characters of the Elden Ring universe.
For Cherry, Malenia’s tragic story provided the foundation for what is notably one of the slower and more atmospheric tracks on the new record. She explained:
“Honestly? I think this is the solo song that Svalbard fans will appreciate the most. It has the big reverb-drenched leads, the pretty-yet-sad harmonies, a balance of emotional screams and delicate clean singing. It’s the slowest and least heavy song on the album, leaning into atmospheric Finnish Metal influences such as Insomnium and Sentenced, but also DSBM influences such as Thy Light.”
She went on to explain how Malenia’s story of sacrifice and loss shaped the song, particularly the character’s attempts to protect her brother Miquella while being consumed by Scarlet Rot.
“But what does the music mean? Well, in the fight to protect those you love, you can get destroyed beyond recognition. When love morphs into sacrifice that leads to inevitable loss. This is what my new song ‘Goddess of Rot’ is about – but specifically, it is about Malenia.”
Cherry added:
“Malenia is one of the bleakest characters in the harsh game of ‘Elden Ring.’ So of course, she is my favourite. She is fighting to protect her brother Miquella while slowly losing herself to Scarlet Rot.”
The musician also said she connected deeply with Malenia’s story of abandonment and wanted the song to reflect the destructive nature of Scarlet Rot.
“I deeply connected with her tragic story, so I wrote a song about Malenia to encapsulate the abandonment she suffers but also pay sonic tribute to the devastating power of her Scarlet Rot.”
‘Extinguish Thy Flame’ is scheduled for release on September 25th.
