Bring Me The Horizon frontman Oli Sykes has opened up about the band’s decision to revisit and re-record their 2006 debut album ‘Count Your Blessings’, while also revealing new details about the group’s upcoming 20th anniversary performances.
Speaking during a recent appearance on the Nik Nocturnal Podcast, Sykes reflected on the making of the original record and admitted the band had never been fully satisfied with how it turned out sonically.
While the deathcore release helped establish Bring Me The Horizon in the heavy music underground, Sykes explained that the band’s inexperience in the studio played a major role in the album’s rough production.
“We were just always disappointed with how it sounded. We didn’t really know what we were doing back then. We didn’t know about click tracks, guitar panning, any of that stuff.”
Sykes recalled listening to the album in his car shortly after it was finished and immediately feeling underwhelmed compared to the heavier records that inspired the band at the time.
“I remember putting the CD on in the car and thinking, ‘This does not sound good.’ I don’t think I ever really listened to it again after that.”
For the newly announced reconstruction version, titled ‘Count Your Blessings – Repented’, the band enlisted Buster Odeholm of Humanity’s Last Breath, Vildhjarta, and Thrown fame to handle mixing duties.
According to Sykes, the challenge was finding a balance between modern production quality and preserving the raw spirit of mid-2000s deathcore.
“We didn’t want it sounding like modern metalcore. We wanted it to sound like the best possible version of a 2006 deathcore record.”
The vocalist also confirmed the band seriously considered revising some of the album’s lyrics that have not aged particularly well, though the focus ultimately remained on recreating the record authentically.
Alongside the re-recording project, Bring Me The Horizon are preparing for a pair of ambitious anniversary shows at Manchester’s B.E.C. Arena this July in partnership with Outbreak Fest.
Sykes revealed the performances will feature no barricades separating fans from the stage, with an additional platform specifically designed to encourage stagediving and crowd interaction.
“Not only no barricade, there’s actually an extra stage before the stage that people can get on and stage dive from.”
He also confirmed at least one of the shows is expected to be professionally filmed, while joking that he still is not entirely sure how the setup is legally allowed for an arena-sized venue.
The upcoming performances will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the landmark release and feature support from Static Dress, Dying Wish, Heriot, Rolo Tomassi, Car Underwater, and Still In Love.
