PRESIDENT Opens Up in Interview, Reflects on Band’s Beginnings, and Reveals Member Aliases: “We’re Never Going to Discuss or Acknowledge Our Identities”

A shadowy band, masks concealing their identities, religious imagery, and a cryptic tagline: “No names. No past. No distractions. Only the mission ahead.” In February, masked rock band President quietly entered the scene, leaving fans guessing. With no prior music or online presence, the release of a teaser video immediately generated buzz—and the announcement that they would perform at the UK’s largest rock and metal festival only amplified the mystery. This insight comes from a detailed Metal Hammer interview with the band, revealing their creative process, personal journeys, and the story behind their debut EP.

Sharing a stage with the equally enigmatic Sleep Token fueled speculation, and the later release of singles “In The Name Of The Father” and “Fearless” added even more intrigue. By the time President made their live debut on June 15 at Download Festival, the hype had reached a fever pitch. The Dogtooth Stage was overflowing, with fans packed six or seven deep outside the tent.

Frontman Reflects on Download Debut

The band’s frontman, known simply as President, admits:

“That’s the most nervous I’ve ever been in my life. It was trial by fire – but I’ve noticed if you do something that’s really uncomfortable and hard, and it goes well, the gratification you get from it is so much higher.”

Raised in a religious household, President left faith behind as he grew older, sparking an existential journey. The mask he wears isn’t a marketing tactic; it’s a personal tool to explore heavy, complex themes:

“When you’re institutionalised into something and you eventually get out of it, you end up wondering, ‘How much of this is what I think, and how much is what I was told to think?’ President is the perfect way for me to explore these feelings and not have it feel like ‘me’ who has the spotlight on them.”

Musical Identity and Influences

Inevitably, comparisons to Sleep Token arose due to their masked aesthetic, but President’s music quickly defined its own identity. Their first releases blend tech metal, electronica, and pop influences, carving out a sound that pushes genre boundaries while remaining emotionally grounded”

“None of this is anti-religion. It’s baring the soul of the search for higher meaning. I was in a very dark place five years ago. I couldn’t write about it in other projects because I felt too vulnerable with it all; this project has allowed me to come out of that. It’s a massive journey of discovery.”

Writing In The Name Of The Father

The journey began around Christmas 2023, when President started writing lyrics for “In The Name Of The Father”, pouring in struggles with faith, mortality, and personal growth. Fast forward 18 months, and a massive crowd was singing his words back at him:

“They were singing In The Name Of The Father like they’d known it for 20 years. I started crying when I came off-stage. It fucking broke me! I’d written that song before I’d really figured out how this was all going to fit together and play out. It was a note to myself, where I was and what I was going through.”

Debut EP King Of Terrors

Over the following eight months, President completed the six-track King Of Terrors EP. The title references a biblical metaphor for death, exploring how life changes depending on whether there is—or isn’t—something beyond it.

“It’s the ultimate marker – if there’s nothing after death, then that changes everything about life, and the same is true if there is something. My uncle passed away a few years ago, and that was the first time I’d had someone die who was close to me when I wasn’t part of this religious thinking. It hit me really hard. So King Of Terrors sums up the journey I’ve been on.”

Originally a solo project, President has grown into a fully realized band with drummer Vice, bassist Protest, and guitarist Heist, helping bring the vision to life. Rumors about their identities abound, including speculation that the frontman could be Charlie Simpson (Busted, Fightstar), though nothing is officially confirmed.

“We’re never going to discuss or acknowledge our identities.”

What’s Next for President

Looking ahead, President’s first headline show sold out in minutes. Early next year, the band will open for Architects on a European arena tour. “President is therapeutic, in a way. It’s turned into this safe space to explore things I didn’t think I could before. So I’m going to write a full-length pretty much immediately.”

The King Of Terrors EP is set for release on September 26, 2025.
