Puscifer have returned with big news — the band has debuted their new single “Self Evident” alongside a lyric video, and announced details for their upcoming fifth studio album, Normal Isn’t, due out February 6th via Puscifer Entertainment.
The release marks the group’s first new album in five years and brings in an impressive lineup of collaborators. Among them is Danny Carey of Tool, who appears on drums for “Seven One”. Longtime touring member Greg Edwards (Failure) contributes bass, while drummers Gunnar Olsen and Sarah Jones also feature throughout the record.
Additional guests include Ian Ross — father of Nine Inch Nails’ Atticus Ross — providing narration on “Seven One”, and legendary bassist Tony Levin (King Crimson) lending his skills to both that track and the album’s title cut.
Frontman Maynard James Keenan described the new material as a reflection of his post-punk roots, explaining:
“We’re definitely leaning into our early influences. It’s the place where goth meets punk. It’s where I came from.”
Keenan took a more hands-on approach during the writing process this time, shaping full song ideas before bringing them to the rest of the band. Co-vocalist Carina Round shared how that shifted their dynamic:
“Instead of just saying, ‘I want this to sound like Fleetwood Mac on cocaine if they had a baby with PJ Harvey,’ Maynard was showing us his intention, which was really cool. In Puscifer, any idea can totally change without any preciousness, and everybody is on board – not unlike an insane asylum.”
Guitarist and producer Mat Mitchell added that the band pushed for a rawer sound this time around:
“From the outset, we had discussed an element of rawness and edge, which guitar brings. We got rid of the guard rails and made the music more aggressive.”
As for the album’s concept, Keenan noted:
“‘Normal Isn’t’ reflects this time we are living in. As storytellers and artists, our job is to observe, interpret, and report. We take in our environment and share what we see, and what we see around us does not appear normal. Not by a long shot.”
