Pussy Riot have teamed up with Avenged Sevenfold for a guest appearance on their upcoming album CYKA, set for release on June 12th. The collaboration arrives via the newly released single “CANDY DOPAMINE”, which features contributions from members of the multi-platinum metal outfit.
The track serves as one of the final previews ahead of the album’s release and continues Pussy Riot’s long-running history of high-profile cross-genre collaborations.
Speaking on the single, Pussy Riot founder Nadya Tolokonnikova described the track as a reflection on prescription drug use, designer substances, and modern self-medication culture:
“This song is kind of a love & hate song to prescription and designer drug culture. It started with my dependence on anti depressants, but it’s also looking at everyone now mentalhealthmaxxing and looksmaxxing via pills and injections. It’s not a judgement, it’s just an observation and my personal experience with these things is that I have to be in a long term relationship with them for my PTSD and depression.”
This is not the first time the two acts have worked together. In 2023, Tolokonnikova appeared on a reworked version of Avenged Sevenfold’s “We Love You”, with Pussy Riot later joining the band on select live performances.
Pussy Riot continue to operate from exile following their history of political activism in Russia, which previously led to the imprisonment of members of the collective.
