Rage Against The Machine reportedly had an opportunity to return to the Coachella stage in 2027, but ultimately opted against headlining the long-running California festival.
According to a new report from TMZ, the politically outspoken Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductees were among the acts approached about headlining next year’s edition of Coachella. However, the band reportedly declined the offer.
Rage Against The Machine have a lengthy history with the festival, having headlined its inaugural event in 1999. They were also booked for the 2000 edition before making another appearance as headliners in 2007. The group were later scheduled to return in 2020, though the COVID-19 pandemic forced that year’s festival to be postponed. By the time Coachella finally went ahead in 2022, the band’s planned appearance had been scrapped.
The group have remained largely inactive since August 2022, when their reunion touring plans came to an abrupt halt. That comeback run was already facing significant challenges after frontman Zack de la Rocha suffered a severe Achilles tendon tear during the opening leg. Despite the injury, de la Rocha pushed through the remainder of that initial stretch of shows, performing primarily while seated.
Rage Against The Machine subsequently brought that touring chapter to a close, with no further reunion activity materializing since.
TMZ also reports that BTS were approached about headlining the 2027 festival but likewise declined. The outlet, citing unnamed sources, instead identifies Dua Lipa, SZA and Tame Impala as the expected headliners for next year’s event.
Coachella 2027 is currently scheduled to take place across two weekends, April 9-11 and April 16-18, in Indio, California.
