Alex Terrible, vocalist of Slaughter To Prevail, took to social media this morning (March 31st) to express the pride he holds for his Russian heritage. The band faced challenges in early 2022 when Russia’s invasion of Ukraine shifted global perceptions of the country. At the time, Terrible publicly condemned war, stating:
“We play deathcore/death metal and show guns, weapons, and tanks in our videos. Despite this, we are against war. We are against any war. It hurts us to see what is happening in Ukraine. We have played there many times, and our last tour finished in Ukraine.
Please do not make all Russian people accomplices. I wish you a beautiful, peaceful sky above your head.”
With the war still ongoing and geopolitical tensions remaining high, expressions of Russian culture continue to be a complex topic in the West. Despite this, Terrible, who has been living in Florida, has openly celebrated his homeland, even incorporating a Russian flag into his stage attire as recently as this year.
Addressing his stance on Instagram, he explained:
“…I’m a man of peace. I believe that everyone born on this earth is a citizen of the world. But each has his own country, his own culture, his own story. Everyone has a good story and a bad one, and whatever it is, you have to respect it. People ain’t perfect but what I do is play music around the world in my mother tongue—fucking love it.
And I don’t do it to earn respect from my compatriots, like, ‘Look what a patriot I am.’ I’m not a patriot! I don’t need such a fucking opinion! I do it because I am Russian and I am proud to be Russian. No matter where I am. I want to live where I want. I want to travel, I fucking love America. But Russia is my home, beloved home. With their history, with their people, with their wounds and victories. I’m with you Russia. Forever and ever.”
