Soundgarden made their long-awaited return to the stage on September 9, joining the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots at Lumen Field in Seattle, WA for a special halftime performance.
The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductees were joined by The Pretty Reckless vocalist Taylor Momsen, who has stepped into the role of vocalist with the band on several notable occasions since Chris Cornell’s passing. Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready also joined the group for the performance, which featured a medley including “Outshined” and “Spoonman.”
McCready had already appeared earlier in the evening, performing the U.S. national anthem ahead of the game.
Momsen’s history with Soundgarden includes last year’s Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony, where she performed with the band in tribute to Cornell.
While the performance marked a significant return for Soundgarden, viewers who tuned into the NBC broadcast hoping to catch the set were reportedly left frustrated. The band’s brief halftime appearance received little to no television coverage, prompting an outpouring of complaints from fans across social media.
The performance comes as Soundgarden continue work on their forthcoming studio album, which will feature the band’s final recordings with Cornell. The record remains in the post-production stage as the group works through the remaining label, production and promotional details surrounding its eventual release.
