The Mars Volta have officially announced a new live album, Lucro Sucio; Unfinished Business, a fan-curated release built from performances captured throughout the band’s 2025 tour.
Rather than selecting the recordings themselves, the progressive rock outfit invited fans to vote on their favorite performances from each song through a series of cryptic online campaigns. The result is a live album that showcases material from the band’s latest studio effort, Lucro Sucio; Los Ojos del Vacio, which was performed in full during much of the 2025 trek.
Lucro Sucio; Unfinished Business will arrive digitally on September 4, with physical editions following on October 16. In addition to a standard stereo mix, the album will also be available in Dolby Atmos.
Speaking with Spin, multi-instrumentalist Omar Rodríguez-López explained why documenting this particular tour became so important to the band.
“This whole last year of 2025 started with Deftones and then it went into our own tour, performing Lucro Sucio. Maybe this is subjective, but this was unquestionably our favorite tour in 31 years of touring — no competition.”
Rodríguez-López said the emotional connection between the band, crew and fans made the tour unlike any other in the group’s history.
“We came away from it feeling this level of spiritual and emotional fulfillment that’s really hard to reach and completely impossible to manufacture.”
He also detailed how the fan-voting process evolved from a simple idea into a collaborative project that shaped the entire release.
Initially, Rodríguez-López intended to compile what fans considered the three best performances from the tour. However, after discussions with a close collaborator, the concept expanded into allowing fans to vote on individual moments from all 25 recorded performances.
The only exception was the Philadelphia show, which was unavailable due to recording issues.
“To me, this is the perfect collaboration between us and our fans. I hope they enjoyed it as much as I did.”
The band has also released “Cue The Sun/Alba del Orate” as the first preview of the live album. Pre-orders for Lucro Sucio; Unfinished Business are available now through The Mars Volta’s official website, with the live record retaining the same track order as its studio counterpart.
