Thursday have released more new music with the arrival of “White Bikes,” following up their April single “Application For Release From The Dream.” This track marks another milestone for the emo rockers, who have been steadily reintroducing their sound after a 13-year hiatus from recording.
In a heartfelt post shared today (December 5th), the band reflected on the song’s creation and its significance:
“SURPRISE! We’ve been blown away by your support this year: you’ve bought our merch, come to our shows, streamed our music. In April, we dropped our first song in over a decade. Then in June, we had the opportunity to spend time at Hansa Studios in Berlin, where David Bowie wrote and recorded Heroes, where Nick Cave, Iggy Pop, Depeche Mode, and R.E.M. all made history.
White Bikes began with an idea from Norman Brannon, and you can hear his distinctive style all over this song. Stu Richardson suggested producing it as a nostalgic, upbeat, summertime version of War All the Time. Lyrically, Geoff [Rickly] reflects on the loss of a dear friend — one of the first people he ever played music with — who disappeared one day on his bike.
The song was produced by Stu Richardson, who also collaborates with Geoff Rickly in their other project, No Devotion. Alongside the release is a video filmed at Hansa Studios, directed by Nick Scholey, which documents the band’s time in Berlin.
“White Bikes” arrives 25 years to the day since Thursday released their first song, serving as a gift to fans and a poignant reminder of their enduring connection.
