New Zealand alternative metal artist Vana has returned with her latest single, “Bleeding Heart,” along with an accompanying music video that expands on the song’s themes.
Released today, September 16, the track marks the third single Vana has released since signing with Sumerian Records, continuing the rollout of new material from the artist.
The accompanying video was co-directed by Areon Mobasher and Coco Joelle, with the visual world drawing from the same botanical imagery that helped inspire the song itself.
For Vana, the starting point was the bleeding heart flower, scientifically known as Lamprocapnos spectabilis. She used the flower’s natural life cycle as a metaphor for the way emotions can develop, flourish and eventually fade.
“The song began with the flower itself, ‘Bleeding Heart’ or ‘Lamprocapnos spectabilis’. This song showcases how feelings grow like flowers do; beautiful but destined to wither.”
Rather than viewing that inevitable cycle solely through a pessimistic lens, Vana said there is something beautiful in the repetition of life, death and renewal found in nature.
“Perhaps that’s pessimistic, but flowers blossom just to die in winter, and they do it every year. I think there’s a sort of beauty in that.”
The song and its accompanying video ultimately expand beyond the floral imagery, with Vana describing the project as an exploration of oppression and betrayal.
“This song and video further explores a world of oppression and betrayal. Adah can’t hold us both. Hail Mara.”
With “Bleeding Heart” now available, Vana’s latest chapter with Sumerian Records continues to take shape as she builds toward whatever comes next.
