Anthrax have released “The Edge Of Perfection,” the second single from their long-awaited new studio album, Cursum Perficio.
The track arrives alongside a haunting new music video directed by Jeff Harlow, with the cinematic clip appearing to feature a dramatic twist as its narrative unfolds. The song serves as the latest preview of Cursum Perficio, which is scheduled for release on September 18 and marks the legendary thrash metal band’s first new album since 2016’s For All Kings.
Speaking about the track, guitarist Scott Ian didn’t hold back in his praise, calling it one of the strongest songs the band has ever created.
“It’s the apex predator of Anthrax songs. I think it’s the best song we’ve ever written and the best thing I’ve ever been a part of creatively.”
Ian went on to explain that the song’s lyrical inspiration stems from the power and vulnerability that come with love.
“What’s the most powerful emotion that moves me more than anything? Of course, it’s love. Nothing moves me like the deep feeling that I get from my wife and son.”
According to Ian, “The Edge Of Perfection” explores the delicate balance of protecting and preserving the most important relationships in life.
“Love is perfection, and I like being on the edge of it. I don’t want everything to be about all of the same shit. This record has a whole bunch of love, a whole bunch of fun, and a little hate.”
Drummer Charlie Benante also expressed strong confidence in the song, comparing his reaction to hearing it with the feeling he had when working on some of the band’s most iconic material.
“When I think about songs like ‘Only’ and ‘Indians,’ you know that you hit something and you can feel it. That’s the way I felt about ‘The Edge Of Perfection.'”
With anticipation continuing to build around Cursum Perficio, “The Edge Of Perfection” offers another glimpse into what fans can expect from Anthrax’s first studio album in nearly a decade.
