A new heavy metal project bringing together veterans from across the genre has officially emerged. Axe Dragger is the newly formed band fronted by former Pantera vocalist Terry Glaze, alongside Fu Manchu guitarist Bob Balch, Dark Funeral bassist Fredrik Isaksson, and former Pentagram drummer Pete Campbell.
The band will release their self-titled debut album, Axe Dragger, on March 6 via Ripple Music, with a lyric video for the album’s title track now available.
Balch explained that “Axe Dragger” was the first song written for the project, noting that the collaboration came together almost instantly after Campbell reached out about working on a metal record.
“‘Axe Dragger’ was the first song we wrote,” Balch said. “When ex-Pentagram drummer Minnesota Pete Campbell reached out to me about collaborating on a metal record, those riffs came out of me moments later. The song pretty much wrote itself.”
Balch added that Glaze was a natural fit for the track, and once vocals were added, the direction of the entire project became clear.
“When we both heard the vocals and lyrics, we knew we had something special. I mean, he sings the words ‘heavy metal’ in the first verse! That song lit a fire under all of us and ended up spawning the entire record.”
The lineup was finalized soon after with the addition of Isaksson, whose bass work helped solidify the band’s sound.
“The riffs on this song were inspired by the early ’80s metal records I grew up on — Judas Priest, Riot, Maiden, Dio, etc. Hope you dig it!”
Campbell echoed that sentiment, recalling how quickly the project gained momentum once Glaze joined in.
“This was the first track Bob sent me for the project,” Campbell said. “When we got Terry’s vocals back, I knew right away we were onto something — and ten songs later, we had a whole record.”
He also praised the musicianship across the board.
“Fredrik’s bass playing is ungodly, and Bob is a freakin’ riff machine. Such an honor to jam with. I’m super excited for people to hear this band. Proud of the music and the guys involved. Hail metal!”
