Brad Arnold, frontman of 3 DOORS DOWN, has revealed that he is currently battling clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), a form of kidney cancer that has metastasized to his lung. In a heartfelt video message released earlier today (May 7), Arnold shared the news with fans, expressing his strength and resilience despite the difficult diagnosis.
Blabbermouth transcribed the video, with Arnold saying:
“Hey, everybody, it’s Brad from 3 DOORS DOWN. I hope you’re having a great day today. I’ve got some not-so-good news for you today. I was sick a couple of weeks ago and went to the hospital, where I was diagnosed with clear cell renal [cell] carcinoma that has spread to my lung. It’s stage four, and that’s not great. But you know what? We serve a mighty God, and He can overcome anything. So, I have no fear. I’m not scared of it at all. But unfortunately, this means we have to cancel our summer tour. I’m sorry about that, and I would love for you to lift me up in prayer whenever you can. I think it’s time for me to listen to ‘It’s Not My Time’ a little bit.”
He concluded the message by thanking fans for their support:
“Thank you, guys, so much. God loves you. We love you. See you.”
ccRCC is the most common form of kidney cancer in adults, making up about 80% of all renal cell carcinoma cases. The condition is known for its clear-looking tumor cells under a microscope. For Arnold, the prognosis is challenging, as ccRCC that has spread to other parts of the body significantly lowers the five-year survival rate. According to the National Cancer Institute, when ccRCC has metastasized, the five-year survival rate drops to around 10%.
As a result of Arnold‘s diagnosis, 3 DOORS DOWN has canceled all upcoming tour dates, including headlining shows, festival appearances, and support dates with CREED, as well as their performance at Morgan Wallen’s Sand In My Boots festival.
At age 46, Arnold recently celebrated nine years of sobriety, and has credited his personal growth and determination for overcoming past struggles. Reflecting on his transformation, Arnold shared on social media in January:
“I feel like a different person than I did in 2016… and it feels so good. Without question, I’ve found peace with myself. I was so tired of carrying that burden. I couldn’t do it anymore, so I made a change, and I’m not looking back. If you’re struggling with something, make the change. It can lift that weight off you.”
In a 2021 interview with The Young Folks, Arnold also revealed he quit smoking in 2018 after more than 25 years as a smoker, and he credited quitting smoking and alcohol for greatly improving his voice.
Arnold co-founded 3 DOORS DOWN at age 16 and went on to pen the band’s iconic hit, “Kryptonite”.
We’re sending Brad nothing but positive vibes and strength as he faces this tough battle. Keep him in your thoughts during this time, and let’s support him in any way we can.
