    After 25 Years Together, Brent Hinds Publicly Calls MASTODON ‘A Sh*t Band With Horrible Humans’

    Following a GRAMMY Award-winning 25-year run with Mastodon, vocalist and guitarist Brent Hinds officially parted ways with the band this past March. Since then, Hinds has not held back in expressing his dissatisfaction with his former bandmates, frequently posting pointed remarks on social media targeting Mastodon’s ongoing activities.

    On June 24th, Mastodon shared a post commemorating the 11th anniversary of their sixth studio album, Once More ‘Round the Sun. A fan commented on the post, saying, “‘Halloween’ is definitely my #1 track on this record — definitely gonna miss B. Hinds though.” To that, Hinds responded directly and bluntly, writing:

    “I want miss being in a sh*t band with horrible humans ..”

    While Hinds has been outspoken, Mastodon’s remaining members have taken a more measured approach in discussing the split. Guitarist Bill Kelliher told Guitar World in March:

    “What can you say about the legacy of Mastodon’s first 25 years with Brent? It’s been a fun, wild f*cking ride, that’s for sure. We achieved a lot of things that I never in a million years would have imagined. There’s been Grammys, touring with our heroes, like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Motorhead, and Tool. I cherish all of that.

    Like a marriage, sometimes people grow apart, and they get interested in other things. We wish nothing but the best for Brent in chasing his dreams. You know, it’s amazing that we made it 25 years with the four of us. I mean, it’s like being married to three other dudes, traveling the world, trying to stay the course, and having everybody agree.

    That we managed to do it this long, I feel like that’s a feat in itself. You could never replace any of us because we [are the] the sum of four parts.”

    Since Hinds’ departure, Mastodon have enlisted guitarist Nick Johnston as a touring replacement and have reportedly begun recording their first album without Hinds.

      Remember when they wrote a whole album while he was in the hospital and then when he came back, he had his own album and they tossed the one they had written and released Crack The Skye instead.

      It’s a shame really. Brent is very talented and they wrote amazing music together, but it really seems like Brent has some serious issues that the rest of the guys were sick of dealing with. I’ll continue to support Mastodon as well as whatever Brent decides to do. Hopefully Brent will reconcile with the dudes some day but that’s probably wishful thinking.

      They were not particularly good at all the last couple of times I saw them and that had a lot to do with Brent playing sloppy and seeming to have forgotten how his guitar and pedals worked. Glad he’s out. Wasn’t planning to see them again until he was.

      I mean, they kind of are a shit band. Majority of their material is forgettable. Troy put out better material in two Killer Be Killed albums than all of mastodons catalog combined. I saw mastadon open for gojira (not even fair for mastadon) and they were tight live but what songs did they play? Idk, unless you’re a die hard fan you wouldnt know

      Brent is enormously talented and I hate to throw shade, but the dude’s got a big ego and serious personal and interpersonal issues. His career’s been consistently marred with conflicts with other artists. I genuinely wish him nothing but success but he’s gotta rein it in some.

      Mastodon were amazing and made perfect albums up until and including crack the Skye. They were the new Metallica. The Hunter was really good but the first album where I skipped songs. Everything after that is OK but still better than most other bands.

      Brent is amazing and a big part of their sound but it seems like he’s drifted apart from them and maybe just a difficult person to work with. I totally respect them deciding to move on from what seems like bullshit antics from Brent (amazing as he is musically)

      “Horrible Humans” is hard for me to believe years ago even though I couldn’t afford to go I wished them a good show here in Dallas, not 30 minutes later I got a DM from Brann offering me 2 tickets to go to the show it was amazing. Them and Opeth Literally blew my mind they’ve been my favorite band ever since. He’s a great musician but the guys always in some kind of heat.

        River Lemser I met Brann in Baltimore. I was talking to him about Tamar’s bubinga wood drums as I was upgrading. He was like “ dude we can talk about this all night. Why don’t you stop by the Ottobar and tell them you’re on the friends of Mastdodon list.” So we showed up. They had the upstairs reserved. I talked to bill about Star Wars, exchanged emails and since have traded. I offered to buy Troy a drink but he refused, pulled out his card and bought us a round. Brann and I just nerded out talking drums and Iron Maiden. Brent asked me for blow and I ofc didn’t have any (no thanks) then he stopped talking mid sentence and walked away.

          Matt Rogers been there. I met brent in arizona and the first thing he asked me for was blow. After i said no he asked for weed. After i said no again he walked away. Met brann after that and talked about hockey for like 30 min. Then we got hammered. Good times

        River Lemser My dad was abusive, but when people met him, they couldn’t believe that because he was such a “nice guy”. I’ve also been in a band with horrible humans that were seemingly nice to strangers.
        As they say, there’s 3 sides to a story. Your side, their side, and the truth. I think it would be foolish for anyone to lay blame 100 percent on any one of them. Good, bad, or ugly everyone has the part they played.

        Ray Hinojosa I think the newer albums will be heavier. Brent had been trying to make the band less of a heavy metal band. In interviews Brann and bill have shared that they’re working on stuff closer to remission. They’re recording their new album now and it won’t have any ideas or contributions from Brent

His attitude was increasingly shit and you could tell for at least the last three albums they were leaving space in songs for him to fill when he finally drags his ass into the studio and he never bothers unless he wrote the thing himself. He is a fucking real dude with real emotions and moods and he deserves to be able to vent and get things off his chest whether it’s all true or whether it’s the product of a party bender or whatever. All I can say is I’ve known the guy a long time and it isn’t necessary to take every thing he says to heart when he is pissed and it’s the people he loves the most that usually get the worst of it. Lol For all I can tell, he may have just said that to stir up a bunch shit that they could all laugh at or something. Don’t be too hard on the dude. He is a super nice, talented guy that has managed to survive things that a lot of our friends did not. He deserves a little bit of “look the other way” cause he is human and he never agreed to be some kinda saint or anyones role model. If he hadn’t shared his art and his music and so much of his time with everyone, nobody would care what he says so don’t forget about all that because you don’t get his humor or dont agree with things you don’t know about.

      It was Crack the Sky Tour as I saw Mastodon in Cologne. Music was good and Show was awesome then Brent kick Troy in the back for some reason nobodys knows. I think that he is the one who are not the fairest and rightest person. I can understand the reaction that he was fired by the others very well.

      I’ve lived in Atlanta since 2006. I currently share a practice facility with Mastodon. I’ve played many shows in many bands supporting these guys and their many projects. I can tell you with 100% certainty that Brent is the problem.

      In 2018, I saw Mastodon play in Tijuana, and Brent was being really friendly with people and seemed super happy. He kept talking on the mic, saying he was so glad to be there and stuff like that. At one point, Troy actually quieted him down, saying, “Hey man, we’re still working, relax!” It was weird; the moment felt like a not-so-friendly intervention.

      The one time I saw Mastodon, Brent was CLEARLY drunk on stage, constantly yelling at the sound people, constantly kicking the monitors and just being extremely unhinged. He was the only person out of the four bands that played that night that had any issue. I have a feeling this wasn’t an isolated incident of this kind of behavior.

        Christopher Smithers when I was at their concert in Dublin in 2019 Blood and Thunder was the last song performed on the night. Brent messed up the guitar solo and Bill had to do it instead. When they finished the song Brent stormed off the stage!

      I’ve met the entire band on several occasions. Brent was the only one that was ever rude…. I still love them all. But I think the guys are not the problem here. Brent is definitely still a heavy drinker/rockstar type guy. And I just don’t the rest of them are still in the lifestyle.

      Met the band twice, seen them 10+ times. All guys were cool and friendly and took good time for their fans. Of all the shows I seen, everyone was tight and seemed to enjoy performing except 2 occasions were Brent was clearly out of it, kicking stacks and being a general d!ck on stage. I still love the guy but I’ve no doubt he was the problem

      I never care for band drama but Mastodon hasn’t been interesting to me since “Crack the Skye.” Their first album was heavy as hell and they kept that for Leviathan while evolving musically with each album and then all of sudden mellowed out and changed their groove and sound into something I found boring and completely different than what made me originally love the band. Brent is a great metal guitarist and solid vocalist but the guy is and always has been a douche bag. It always irritates me to think how good Mastodon was when they were heavy as hell. They’re not a bad band by any means and they are talented (every member) but they drastically changed their sound and did so more and more with each album and it just became so boring.

      Who knows? I hung out with Brett once at my restaurant. It was around the “Crack the Skye” era and he was very friendly. Just like chatting with another music fan. Sometimes shit happens. Bands are a tricky thing at the best of times.

      I met them, minus Brent, at a Tool show in Atlanta and they were very cool to me. Very appreciative of my fandom.
      However, a buddy of mine met Brent at a bar in Atlanta and told him how much he likes the band, and Brent was hammered and tried to fight my friend.

      This hit me as a note to self – look at this splattered everywhere online. He and the band will probably end up discussing this until the the end of time. Cue Mustaine/Metallica violins saga.

      I took this as a personal note to speak positively like about former or potential bandmates or even people you’ve jammed with.

      You limit future collaborations if you don’t. Which might be a good thing with some really toxic bandmates you no longer want to work with.

      You never know where you’ll be musically in 5, 10 years from now. Good to keep doors open.

      So it’s a shit band now he isn’t in it. I’ve seen them.live. If it wasn’t for the other guys their live performances would have been a laughing stock because of Hinds. I’ve seen them 3 times and he sucked every time. Not the rest of the band. Just him. So there that is.
