Atlanta police have concluded their investigation into the August 20th crash that claimed the life of Mastodon guitarist/vocalist and co-founder Brent Hinds. According to Atlanta News First, authorities determined that the 51-year-old musician was at fault, citing excessive speed as the leading factor.
Police reports state that Hinds was traveling between 63–68 mph—roughly double the posted speed limit—when his Harley Davidson collided with an SUV that failed to yield while making a turn. Investigators relied on traffic camera footage and witness accounts before issuing their findings, ultimately concluding: “Hinds was at fault for the crash.”
The collision left Hinds with severe injuries to his head, arms, and torso. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later passed away.
This past weekend, friends, family, fans, and his Mastodon bandmates gathered in Atlanta, GA for a memorial march celebrating his life and legacy.
An excerpt from his official obituary reads:
“William Brent Hinds, acclaimed guitarist, vocalist, and founding member of pioneering metal band Mastodon, passed away on August 20, 2025, in Atlanta, Georgia. He was 51… Known for blending country, bluegrass, and psychedelia into metal, Brent’s work inspired countless musicians and fans. His legacy as one of the most creative guitarists of his generation will endure.”
