Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine has opened up about his complex history with Metallica and his hopes for a potential co-headlining tour. Speaking with Revolver during the press run for Megadeth’s impending final studio album — due this Friday, January 23 — Mustaine reflected on covering Metallica’s “Ride The Lightning”, a track he helped write, as a way to “close the circle” and show respect to his former band.
Despite years of ups and downs with Metallica members James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, including a 2016 royalty dispute over the release of their No Life ‘Til Leather demo, Mustaine expressed a desire to rebuild ties.
“You know, I liked them. If the friendship was restarted, it wouldn’t bother me. I would accept, and I think it would be nice to revisit some of those times. But I just think because there was a lot of hurt and misunderstanding around our time together that it would be difficult not to keep bringing up the past,” he told Revolver.
Mustaine added that the solution, in his eyes, is a shared tour:
“I think what needs to happen is there needs to be a Megadeth/Metallica tour. Period. That would, I’m sure, make everything right. We could hang out. Spend time together. But I know they don’t really tour like we do. I mean, when we go out on tour, we play many, many shows.”
Reflecting on the challenges of repairing relationships after decades of history, Mustaine noted his willingness to move past grudges:
“Yeah. It’s starting over. Sometimes, I think, when you have a grudge, you can’t… You can’t get past it. Personally, I’m pretty good at getting over grudges. But I don’t know… If it’s meant to be, I’m sure I’ll see those guys.”
Mustaine also recalled a personal memory from his time in Metallica:
“I remember we played up in San Francisco at the Cow Palace, and James told me he wanted me to play ‘My Last Words,’ because that was his favorite song. I thought that was really cool. Thank you, James. To say that you had a favorite song of mine, that was really nice.”
While Mustaine has previously suggested a Megadeth/Metallica tour, his tone in this interview is notably less antagonistic than in 2023, reflecting a more reconciliatory approach toward his former bandmates.

If Dave had been consistent in how he spoke about them over the years- like he did over the RTL cover where he spoke well of James and Lars, then I could see it but over how many years you he’s flipping back and forth between bitter and shooting his mouth off then nostalgic and speaking really fondly of them- it seems week to week whether it’s grumpy or kind Dave. I regret the music we missed out on. These guys could have easily gotten together and made some more music together over the years for the fans.
Look at the eagles, without a doubt one of the biggest bands in the world and they all hate each other. But they stayed together and made music together . Beautiful music. And had solo careers as well. And that’s what I was hoping for from Metallica and Megadeth.
They were very similar and on the same trajectory for many years. And RTL was without a doubt their finest work. With KEA was all five of them. And it would have been very easy to make great music (side projects)with both Kirk and Dave. I mean Skynyrd had three guitarists.
Every time you bring the subject up it’s like, well we would have never had this band or that band. BS! You obviously do not understand the world of music. It’s not mutually exclusive.
And Dave could have saved Metallica from imploding into alternative hard rock and country.
I don’t regret that music because I love the Load albums. Metallica did a great job reinventing themselves.

Megadeth isn’t strong enough live to hold an opening arena spot for Metallica. Last tour was Pantera and 5FDP which are both stronger live acts and they struggled in that environment. Metallica is king in the stadiums. I’d love that show in a smaller setting but Metallica sells out weekendS in football stadiums and would never come down to Megadeth’s lower level of popularity
