Denver hardcore punk outfit Destiny Bond have publicly pulled out of their scheduled appearance at this weekend’s Punk In The Park festival. In a statement issued yesterday (July 17th), the band cited a reported donation made by festival organizer Cameron Collins of Brew Ha Ha Productions to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign as the reason behind their decision.
The band explained that this “doesn’t align with our values” and made it clear they wanted no association with the event. However, as of press time, Destiny Bond remains listed on the festival’s official website as set to perform Sunday, July 20th.
The controversy surrounding Punk In The Park Denver escalated following the emergence of donation receipts linked to Collins. In response, a petition — which has collected 705 signatures so far — is circulating to cancel the event outright. The campaign is being led by an Instagram account under the handle @stoppunkinthepark, humorously registered under the name Jack Mehoff.
Their statement reads:
“As a long-time lover of punk rock and many of the bands on this bill, it stings to see a festival that’s supposed to represent our anti-establishment ethos being tied to politically divisive figures such as Trump. Punk in the Park, a new festival in Denver and other U.S. cities, is currently mired in controversy due to its organizer’s support for Trump, a figure whom many in our community find profoundly antithetical to our values.”
They went on to criticize Trump-era policies for exacerbating wealth inequality and stated:
“We must send a strong message that we will not support festivals and organizations that do not align with the values and beliefs of our community. Let’s stand together to halt Punk in the Park from coming to Denver. It’s time to show that we, the punk rock community, are not just a demographic to be monetized, but a collective force that stands for socio-economic justice. Nazi punks, F%$# OFF!”
The petition further encourages alternative shows for bands already in Denver this weekend to be organized independently of the festival.
Punk In The Park Denver is scheduled to run today through Sunday.
