European deathcore outfit Distant have dropped a brand new single titled “Rat Torture,” arriving alongside a music video directed by Jáchym Belcher.
The track continues the band’s bleak, modern approach to extreme metal, pairing relentless heaviness with dystopian themes centered around digital life and psychological control.
In a statement, the band described the concept behind the song as a reflection on modern existence shaped by constant online consumption and artificial validation.
“‘Rat Torture’ is about a suffocating descent into a world where the illusion of freedom is maintained by glowing screens and empty validation.”
They continued by expanding on the track’s central metaphor of humanity as trapped participants in a self-imposed system.
“Every scroll is a mechanized ritual where identity is performed instead of lived. While there might still be a human beneath the glow, it’s too numb to break free.”
Alongside the single release, Distant are preparing for a busy run of European festival appearances throughout the summer and fall.
