Dropkick Murphys have shared their take on The Pogues classic “The Body Of An American,” contributing the track to the upcoming all-star tribute collection 20th Century Paddy – The Songs Of Shane MacGowan.
The tribute album is scheduled to arrive on November 13 and celebrates the enduring legacy of the late Shane MacGowan, whose songwriting helped shape Celtic punk and Irish folk music for generations of artists.
Discussing the band’s involvement in the project, frontman Ken Casey reflected on MacGowan’s influence on both the group and the wider punk community.
“Dropkick Murphys are honored to be a part of this Shane tribute. Shane had a tremendous impact on the members of the band, individually, and on the band as a whole.”
Casey went on to praise MacGowan’s lyrical approach, noting that his songs often carried a gritty realism that resonated deeply with punk audiences.
“Shane’s lyrics had such a dark, sometimes twisted, street-level reality to them that it was more punk than a lot of punk.”
The singer also expressed excitement about appearing alongside an eclectic group of artists featured on the tribute album.
“It’s so cool to participate in this amazing tribute album, alongside such a diverse lineup of musicians like Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Hozier, and so many more all inspired by Shane MacGowan.”
According to Casey, “The Body Of An American” has long been a staple of the band’s live set, making the opportunity to properly record it for the tribute especially meaningful.
The upcoming collection will feature contributions from a wide range of artists, including Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Hozier, Primal Scream, Glen Hansard, The Libertines, Johnny Depp, Kate Moss, and Imelda May, among others.
In other Dropkick Murphys news, the band’s song “Dropped On My Head” has been selected as the theme song for the upcoming crime drama series The Westies, which is set to premiere next month.
