Elder bassist Jack Donovan is recovering after undergoing open-heart surgery to address a serious congenital heart condition that came to light following his hospitalization for pneumonia while on tour.
The heavy psychedelic rock band shared an update on October 9, confirming that Donovan had been released from the hospital and was on the road to a full recovery. His health emergency occurred in Portland, Oregon, in September while Elder were touring North America with Blackwater Holylight, forcing the group to postpone several dates.
According to the band, Donovan suddenly became seriously ill approximately two weeks before the announcement. Friends rushed him to an emergency room, where he was transferred to an intensive care unit, diagnosed with pneumonia, placed on a ventilator and sedated.
As his treatment continued, doctors discovered that underlying congenital heart issues had contributed to the medical emergency.
“Two weeks and one open heart surgery later, Jack is out of the hospital and well on the road to a full recovery.”
Elder credited the quick actions of the friends who got Donovan medical attention with helping save his life. The band also expressed gratitude to the medical team at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center for caring for the bassist throughout what it described as a frightening and complicated situation.
The group thanked fans for their messages and support during Donovan’s hospitalization, noting that the ordeal was especially difficult because it happened in the middle of a tour and far from home.
As for the postponed North American tour dates, Elder said rescheduling plans were close to being finalized, with replacement dates expected to be announced once arrangements are complete. The band asked fans to remain patient as it works through the unusual circumstances.
Donovan’s recovery marks a welcome development for Elder and their supporters following several weeks of uncertainty surrounding his health.
