The Foo Fighters are marking 30 years since their platinum-certified self-titled debut album with two special releases. The band recently completed and shared a recording of influential hardcore punk band Minor Threat’s early ’80s track “I Don’t Wanna Hear It,” which they originally recorded instrumentally in 1995. The vocals were only added earlier this year.
On July 2nd, 2025, Foo Fighters released a brand-new original song, “Today’s Song,” accompanied by a heartfelt letter from frontman Dave Grohl reflecting on the band’s origins and journey over three decades.
Originally recorded in 1995, the Foo Fighters’ cover of Minor Threat’s “I Don’t Wanna Hear It” sat unfinished for nearly 30 years. The recent completion and release of the track offers fans a glimpse into the band’s early influences and the punk energy that helped shape their sound.
In his letter, Dave Grohl recalls a pivotal Thanksgiving night in 1994 beneath the rain-soaked skies of Seattle:
“November 24, 1994, began just like any other dreary Pacific Northwest day underneath the blanket of Seattle’s oppressive, autumn skies… A few heaping plates of food, a few bottles of wine, one thing leading to another, and before long we had started a new band with other dear friends, Pat Smear and William Goldsmith.
We called it Foo Fighters.”
He describes those early days as:
“a mischievous and maybe necessary detour from maturity… Our little brains were still wired like an overloaded extension cord, sparking from too many light strands on the Christmas tree. A childish refusal of adulthood… (Basically, we were just fucking around).”
Grohl shares stories of touring, lineup changes, and growth, paying tribute to the late drummer Taylor Hawkins:
“Taylor. Your name is spoken every day, sometimes with tears, sometimes with a smile, but you are still in everything we do, everywhere we go, forever.”
He also reflects on a mysterious note he found on a flight that inspired a message of resilience:
“Life’s challenges have a way of signaling the need for change and growth, so when that time comes, you retreat, rebuild, and resurface stronger than before. Something I’m sure that we all can relate to as human beings.”
Grohl concludes by acknowledging the strength of their bond and the journey ahead:
“It has been 30 years since I sat beside Nate Mendel with my hands on that Ouija board… and just as I was that stormy Thanksgiving evening in 1994, I am still grateful for life, love, music, and the mystery of where this path may lead us next.”
With these dual releases, Foo Fighters celebrate their hardcore punk roots while looking ahead with new music and stories from the road. Both “I Don’t Wanna Hear It” and “Today’s Song” are available now.
