Fans attending BottleRock Napa Valley were treated to an unexpected deep cut during Foo Fighters’ headlining set this past Saturday, May 23rd, when the band performed The Vaselines’ “Jesus Wants Me For A Sunbeam” for the first time in their live history.
The performance immediately drew comparisons to Nirvana’s famed acoustic rendition of the song, which appeared on the multi-platinum 1994 release MTV Unplugged In New York. The track became closely tied to Nirvana during the band’s later years, with the group regularly incorporating it into live sets during the early 1990s.
For Dave Grohl, the performance also marked a return to material deeply connected to his pre-Foo Fighters career alongside Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic.
Fan-filmed footage from the BottleRock appearance has since surfaced online, capturing the band’s first known live attempt at the song.
