Ice Nine Kills have premiered their latest single “The Great Unknown” alongside an elaborate music video that dropped this morning, July 09th. The gold-certified metalcore outfit draw heavy inspiration from the 1999 sci-fi action classic The Matrix on this latest release—marking a rare step outside their usual horror-driven universe.

The rollout for “The Great Unknown” follows a wave of AI-related controversy tied to the band’s recent social media presence. After facing criticism over their use of AI-generated art, Ice Nine Kills leaned into the theme even further, adopting robotic, algorithmic phrasing in posts and cryptic messaging around frontman Spencer Charnas.

A press release expanded on the bizarre narrative:

“The release of ‘The Great Unknown’ follows weeks of escalating online speculation surrounding frontman Spencer Charnas’ increasingly cryptic and eerily odd behavior. What began as an unforced marketing misfire quickly snowballed into full-blown internet hysteria, as fans, critics, and commentators dissected increasingly uncanny social posts.

Rumors have been swirling that Spencer has been replaced by a highly advanced, if often glitching, artificial intelligence…”

Charnas himself added a tongue-in-cheek, machine-coded statement:
