Punk rock legend Jello Biafra has been hospitalized after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke earlier this week.
A press release issued March 9th through Biafra’s longtime label Alternative Tentacles confirmed that the former Dead Kennedys vocalist experienced the medical emergency on Saturday, March 7th. The stroke was reportedly caused by high blood pressure.
Biafra, 67, shared details about the frightening moment in a personal statement included in the announcement:
“I hopped out of my bed because I needed to pee, and my left leg just collapsed under me and I fell to the floor. I couldn’t even break the fall with my left arm because it wasn’t working either. I tried to hop back up again, and I couldn’t. I realized I had ‘fallen and I can’t get up!’
It was this point I thought, ‘Oh shit, I’m having a stroke!’
I still have a lot of great stuff in me, but right now I gotta lotta rehabbing to do.”
According to the statement, Biafra is currently hospitalized but remains in stable condition while receiving treatment and beginning rehabilitation.
Representatives for Alternative Tentacles also issued a message of support, noting that those close to the influential punk figure are grateful he is receiving proper medical care and will provide further updates as they become available.
Best known as the outspoken frontman of Dead Kennedys, Biafra has remained an influential voice in punk music, political activism, and independent music culture for decades through both his performances and his work running Alternative Tentacles.
