In a new interview with The New York Times, drummer Josh Freese reflected on his short-lived run with Foo Fighters, his firing from the band earlier this year, and his return to Nine Inch Nails.
Freese joined Foo Fighters in May 2023, stepping into the daunting role left behind by the late Taylor Hawkins. Two years later, he was unexpectedly dismissed, later replaced by Ilan Rubin—who, in an ironic twist, had previously taken over Freese’s spot in Nine Inch Nails back in 2008.
Looking back now, Freese admits the fit may never have been perfect. “I’m coming in as Dave Grohl’s drummer, and the guy that’s supposed to save the day after the beloved Taylor Hawkins died,” he said of the challenge. But ultimately, he revealed, “It wasn’t music that I really resonated with.”
The split led Freese back to familiar territory with Nine Inch Nails, proving sometimes a door closing can open up another that feels more natural.
