Josh Freese has revealed that he is no longer the drummer for Foo Fighters, confirming his departure via social media this morning (May 16th). Freese, who stepped into the role in 2023 following the tragic 2022 passing of longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins, shared that the decision came directly from the band earlier this week.
“The Foo Fighters called me Monday night to let me know they’ve decided ‘to go in a different direction with their drummer.’ No reason was given. 🙁 Regardless, I enjoyed the past two years with them, both on and off stage, and I support whatever they feel is best for the band,” he wrote.
Freese went on to add:
“In my 40 years of drumming professionally, I’ve never been let go from a band, so while I’m not angry—just a bit shocked and disappointed. But as most of you know I’ve always worked freelance and bounced between bands so, I’m fine.”
Known for his prolific career working with artists like Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle, and The Vandals, Freese hinted at keeping things lighthearted in the future, joking:
“Stay tuned for my ‘Top 10 possible reasons Josh got booted from the Foo Fighters’ list.”
While rumors about his future with the band had circulated earlier this year, Freese confirmed in March that he was still involved. His departure comes as Foo Fighters prepare to return to the road this fall, following a brief hiatus stemming from personal controversy involving frontman Dave Grohl.

His reaction would lead one to believe there was no falling out. Wonder why at least no explanation or reason given. Strange times in that camp.
