Guitarist and vocalist Reece Scruggs has officially closed the book on his time with Machine Head, reflecting on his departure in an emotional statement that also pays tribute to frontman Robb Flynn for his support during one of the darkest periods of his life. Scruggs is now turning his attention toward Burning Hammer, a new band currently finishing its debut album for Nefarious Industries.
Scruggs’ departure follows a difficult period that previously forced him to step away from touring with Machine Head to spend time with his father, who was battling lung cancer. The guitarist recently reunited with Flynn for a football game, providing an opportunity for the two to bring his chapter with the band to a more positive conclusion.
In a statement shared on October 21, Scruggs described the experience as a meaningful chance to reconnect with Flynn and reflect on their time together.
“What an absolute blast. What a gift. Despite the score I had the time of my life and I could not be more grateful for the experience. It was a blast hanging with everyone at the Niner tailgate. Great food, plenty of drinks, and top notch hangs. I was blown away how friendly everyone was.”
The gathering carried added significance for Scruggs, who recalled the last time he had seen Flynn in person. The pair had met at a Starbucks in Mexico City, where Scruggs broke down while discussing his father’s diagnosis and explained that he needed to return home to be with him.
“I had Robb’s support and understanding before I could get the words out. And though I had the support from him and the MH crew, it was a really shitty, somber, and dark tone to end on.”
According to Scruggs, Flynn later offered him the opportunity to attend the game, allowing them to close out their time together on a happier note. The guitarist also expressed his lasting pride in having toured internationally and released music as a member of Machine Head.
“Being an actual member, touring the world, and releasing a record with Machine Head is a badge of honor I will carry with me forever, and the band and crew will always have my support.”
Scruggs went on to praise Flynn for the personal support he received throughout his family’s difficult circumstances.
“The Robb Flynn I got to know is the kind of guy who listened to me. Understood me. Pushed me. Encouraged me. Robb Flynn had my back and supported me in the darkest time in my life. I’m so grateful for him giving me the opportunity to shake his hand and tell him thank you. It meant the world. An absolute class act.”
He concluded the statement by acknowledging that his time in the band had come to an end, writing, “And with that, a chapter has ended. Time to turn the page.”
That next chapter is already taking shape with Burning Hammer, which features Scruggs alongside bassist Noah Martin (Arsis, among others) and drummer Stefen Burns (Monolith). The group are currently finishing work on their debut album for Nefarious Industries.
Burning Hammer have also released the single “Rabid Lycanthropy,” offering an early introduction to Scruggs’ latest musical venture.
