Italian gothic alternative metal veterans Lacuna Coil are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their fourth studio album, ‘Karmacode’, with a new double single featuring a refreshed take on “Fragile” and a remix of a more recent track.
The two-song release pairs “Fragile XX,” a reworked version of the original album’s opening track, with a remix of “I Wish You Were Dead,” taken from the band’s latest album, ‘Sleepless Empire’. The latter track was reimagined by SWARM, who brought a new approach to the original.
Lacuna Coil co-vocalist Andrea Ferro reflected on the lasting significance of “Fragile,” explaining that the song had already become part of the band’s live repertoire before ‘Karmacode’ arrived in 2006.
“‘Fragile’ has always been a live favorite, it was actually one of the very first songs we debuted on stage even before ‘Karmacode’ was released 20 years ago. Its message of accepting life’s vulnerability, never surrendering though we live in a fragile circle that is often breached, is one that we still relate to today.”
Ferro acknowledged that revisiting a beloved track can be an unsettling process, particularly for the band’s primary songwriter, Maki, but said they approached the new version as a tribute to both the song and the album.
“While reworking a much loved song can initially feel unsettling (in particular for Maki, our main songwriter), we faced the process as a tribute to ‘Fragile’ and ‘Karmacode’, and are really excited by the result. ‘Fragile XX’ feels and sounds like Lacuna Coil in 2026, and we look forward to performing it live for the next 20 years!”
For SWARM, the remix of “I Wish You Were Dead” was an opportunity to revisit an album that helped shape their musical tastes. The producer described being invited to reinterpret Lacuna Coil as a significant honor, while emphasizing the importance of preserving the original’s identity rather than simply changing it for the sake of a remix.
“I’m cautious about agreeing to do remixes, especially when it’s for a band I love. I never ‘remix for the sake of remix’. I want to make it worth the listen; to respect the original while tastefully (and aggressively) turning it upside down and shaking something absolutely crazy out. I’m very proud of how I was able to do that here.”
The double single offers fans a chance to revisit a defining release from Lacuna Coil’s catalog while hearing one of the band’s newer songs transformed through SWARM’s approach.
