Lamb Of God’s Randy Blythe on the State of the World: “This Is the Moment at Which Empires Fall”

Lamb Of God frontman Randy Blythe has opened up about the themes behind the band’s upcoming twelfth studio album, Into Oblivion, calling the title “part declaration and part a worrying commentary” on the current state of the world.

Upon announcing the record earlier this month, Blythe said:

“Because that’s where we’re heading. In general, the album is about the ongoing and rapid breakdown of the social contract, particularly here in America. Things are acceptable now that would’ve horrified people just 20 years ago.”

In a new Kerrang! interview, Blythe shared how he and his wife have significantly limited their internet use and abandoned social media, enforcing physical steps before accessing the web as a way to reconnect with the real world. Even so, he maintains daily overviews of world news.

Reflecting on what he sees online, Blythe said:

“I am not happy with the way the world is right now. We are careening towards some sort of crash, and there are people who not only recognize this, but are trying to hasten it in order to profit from it. [With] the distribution of wealth, the gap is getting wider and wider and wider and wider. I don’t just think that’s true: that’s a fact. We need to learn how important we are to one another. Because the super-rich aren’t going to help you.”

He added:

“This is the moment at which empires fall. We’ve seen this again and again and again. So without sounding too doomsday-ish, I think we’re in late-stage capitalism, and I don’t think it’s going to end well.”

Blythe pointed to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina as an example of “disaster capitalism,” where wealthy individuals bought land from affected communities, only for locals to be priced out of newly developed areas.

“These people know that things are fucked up, and their answer to this is to become as rich as they can in order to isolate themselves and protect themselves from the rest of the populace.”

Despite the grim outlook, Blythe believes that disengaging from “algorithmic rage bait” and reconnecting with local communities may be a way for society to make progress. He shared more of his insights on both Into Oblivion and the current state of the world in the full Kerrang! interview.

Into Oblivion is scheduled for release on March 13, 2026.
