Mastodon have revealed more details surrounding their upcoming album ‘Marrow Deep,’ including a massive lineup of guest appearances featuring members of Black Sabbath, Lamb Of God, Gojira, Clutch, Converge, Queens Of The Stone Age, and more.
The band’s first full-length release following the passing of former guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds will explore themes of loss, change, and renewal. In a new cover story with Kerrang!, the progressive sludge metal veterans opened up about the emotional impact of Hinds’ death, as well as the creative process behind the new record.
Hinds passed away in August 2025 following a motorcycle accident, months after Mastodon had parted ways with the guitarist due to growing tensions surrounding his struggles with substance abuse. The band previously addressed his passing in the mini-documentary ‘The Mastodon In The Room.’
The group also discussed the influence of other major life events surrounding the creation of ‘Marrow Deep,’ including the passing of drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor’s mother shortly before Hinds’ death and the renewed creativity brought by new members Nick Johnston on guitar and João Nogueira on keyboards.
One of the biggest surprises on ‘Marrow Deep’ is an appearance from Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler, who contributes to the track “The Vanishing.”
Butler was a personal favorite of Brann Dailor’s late mother, and the band reached out to the legendary bassist after performing at last year’s ‘Back To The Beginning’ farewell event celebrating Black Sabbath and the late Ozzy Osbourne.
Dailor told Kerrang!:
“She was always like, ‘He writes the lyrics!’ She would absolutely love the song. It’s still a pinch-me moment on the record. He could have just hit an open A, and I would have still been like, ‘FEATURING GEEZER BUTLER ON THE OPEN A!’”
According to bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders, the band sent Butler several tracks to see if anything connected with him creatively. Butler ultimately contributed a bass solo that became the introduction to “The Vanishing.”
“It’s a very Sabbath-inspired track. It’s definitely the bass highlight of the album. And I’m completely happy saying that.”
The track will also feature Joe Duplantier of Gojira, adding another major name to the album’s guest lineup.
Josh Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age also appears on the previously released track “Snakes For Dinner,” while additional guest appearances include members of Lamb Of God, Converge, and Clutch.
The updated track listing for ‘Marrow Deep’ is as follows:
- “Barbarians Blood” (feat. Ben Koller of Converge/Mutoid Man)
- “Poisonous Weapons”
- “Your Ghost Again”
- “Snakes For Dinner” (feat. Josh Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age)
- “Out Like A Lamb”
- “In The Ruins”
- “They’re Coming For You”
- “Golden Spires”
- “Moth And Bone”
- “A Vampire’s Demeanor” (feat. Randy Blythe of Lamb Of God & Nate Newton of Converge)
- “The Vanishing” (feat. Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath & Joe Duplantier of Gojira)
- “The Three Fates” (feat. Neil Fallon of Clutch)
‘Marrow Deep’ will be released on August 28, with Mastodon supporting the album with a North American headlining tour featuring Deafheaven and Alcest.
