System Of A Down guitarist/vocalist Daron Malakian reignited the band’s decades-old feud with Oasis during a pair of performances this week at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England.
The feud dates back to the early 2000s when Oasis guitarist/vocalist Noel Gallagher publicly criticized System Of A Down, once referring to the Armenian-American metal band as “the shittiest band of all time.”
More than two decades later, Malakian appears to have not forgotten the remark.
During System Of A Down’s July 13 performance, Malakian put a new spin on the lyrics to the band’s 2001 track “Needles.” Before launching into the song, he encouraged the crowd to participate in a playful lyrical change aimed directly at Oasis.
Addressing the audience, Malakian said:
“London, do you have an ass? I said, do you have an ass? Everybody say Ass! Ass! Ass! We have a little song about a tapeworm. Just for fun today, I’m going to name the tapeworm. Today I’m gonna name the tapeworm ‘Oasis’.”
He then led the crowd in chanting:
“Pull Oasis out of your ass.”
The jokes didn’t stop there. During System Of A Down’s second London performance on July 15, Malakian reportedly provided updates on England’s soccer match against Argentina while repeatedly encouraging fans to “blame Oasis” for the result.
The comments have once again drawn attention to one of rock and metal’s more unusual long-running feuds, with Malakian seemingly happy to keep the rivalry alive more than 20 years after Noel Gallagher’s original remarks.
