Mastodon paid tribute to the late Ozzy Osbourne during their July 23rd performance at the Release Athens festival in Piraeus, Greece. The Atlanta progressive sludge metal veterans performed their cover of the Black Sabbath classic “Supernaut” in honor of the fallen icon.
The band originally debuted the tribute earlier this month at the Back To The Beginning concert on July 5th in Birmingham, UK—a historic sendoff for both Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne With the metal legend’s passing on July 22nd, the performance in Athens took on an even deeper emotional weight.
Before launching into the track, Troy Sander addressed the crowd:
“We’d like to pay our respects to Black Sabbath. We’ll play a song for Mr. Ozzy Osbourne. Without them there is no Mastodon. Without Black Sabbath, without Ozzy, there is a lot of none of this. So let’s turn sadness into a celebration for about five minutes, Mastodon in Athens, Greece. One song from Black Sabbath, ok? This is a number they called ‘Supernaut’.”
