Maynard James Keenan has undergone another hip replacement, but the Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer frontman insists the procedure won’t keep him from fulfilling his upcoming touring commitments.
Keenan revealed on August 26th that he suffered an unexpected injury to his left hip on July 3rd while A Perfect Circle were touring Europe and the U.K. The injury occurred while he was preparing for his usual morning workout and hike in Luxembourg, leaving him to complete the remainder of the trek while dealing with considerable pain and relying on a cane.
The 62-year-old musician ultimately learned that another hip replacement would be necessary. Keenan previously underwent a hip replacement in 2015 and also earned his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt in 2024.
Despite the setback, Keenan says he has no intention of canceling his upcoming performances. In a lengthy social media update, he explained that he has approximately 27 shows scheduled across 18 countries between September and the end of the year, with all three of his bands involved.
“Don’t be Lazy. Read the Whole Post. July 3rd, woke up Luxembourg on tour w @aperfectcircle. When I went to do my morning workout & hike, my left hip said No. Out of nowhere it just decided to not work. Had to finish the rest of the tour in pain w a cane. Followed by the frantic phone calls & emails to get to the bottom of it. Labrum Tear? Hip replacement? Sprain? I needed answers fast because I have s#!t to do. Many tours. Starting in Sep & all the way to Xmas, I’ll be performing roughly 27 shows in 18 different countries with 3 different bands.”
Rather than postpone those commitments, Keenan pushed to get the surgery completed as quickly as possible. He credited his medical team in Los Angeles with arranging the procedure before his personal recovery deadline.
“Cancelling isn’t an option. People have purchased tickets and booked travel & lodging, most of which is probably nonrefundable. Hats off to the medical team in LA. When taking recovery into consideration, my cut off for a hip replacement would be Sept 1st. These wizards all aligned their wands & got me in on Aug 26th (Today. Right now). Assuming his recovery proceeds as planned, Keenan is slated to spend the remainder of 2026 bouncing between Tool, Puscifer and A Perfect Circle. His current schedule includes the following:
